2012 Dropello Sangiovese Bianco, Tenuta Fertuna

2012 Dropello Sangiovese Bianco, Tenuta Fertuna
ref. FERT120 JAN15

Wine Variety: The most widely-planted grape of Italy is also an ancient one, its first mention in written word being in the early 17th century. And as with many old varieties, untangling Sangiovese's origins is a labour of love. It appears to be of Tuscan origin, but its progenies lie scattered around southern and central Italy and even Sicily and outlying islands. It is certainly closely related to Gaglioppo (grown in Calabria) and Nerello Mascalese of Sicily. To add further to the confusion, a number of unrelated varieties are cultivated under the name Sangiovese. Further, Sangiovese itself offers great clonal diversity i.e. there are many slightly differing cultivated varieties of the grape. When all is said and done, this is a variety straight out of the top drawer and is capable of producing exceptionally fine wines.

Wine Region: The Maremma is a strip of coastal land that stretches from southern Tuscany into Lazio. Until the early 20th century and its draining, the Maremma was a swampy, malaria-riddled and backward land. The renowned wine Sassicaia (from the same stable as this wine) comes from Bolgheri, which is part of the Maremma.

Wine Producer: Dropello is a JV between the owner of Sassicaia (Tenuta San Guido), Nicolo Incisa della Rocchetta, and his friend Giuseppe Meregalli, Tenuta Fertuna's owner. Together they wanted to produce a white wine that could be enjoyed by all. Tenuta Fertuna covers 145 hectares and, in addition to Dropello, produces red wine and olive oil.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

N.B. In 99.9% of red wines, the colour comes from the skins of the grapes. If one crushes the grapes and removes the juice from the pulp in short order, no colour leaks into the juice, ergo one can make white wines from red fruit as here.

Initially tasted at 18.3 degrees C. Really pale and clear in the glass: straw. Unusual nose: dry, of lemon and pear, with hints of grapefruit. Apple, some of which is cooked, plus a dry spiciness. There’s real presence here: a density and a structure that starts early on. A long wine that has green apple acidity throughout. And with the structure and a certain earthiness, it comes across as really dry. This is a food wine, for sure. Long, the back end compact, mineral-earthy and juicy-fresh. And there’s a little light tannin here that underscores its suitability as a food wine.
