2014 Souson The Flower and The Bee, Coto de Gomariz

2014 Souson The Flower and The Bee, Coto de Gomariz
ref. GOMA140 JAN16

Wine Variety: The fruit of the elder bush was, until the late 18th century, used to deepen the colour of port. At that time this activity was prohibited, the non-grape component being replaced by fruit of the Vinhao vine, called Sousao in the Douro. Vinhao is from northern Portugal and produces the most densely coloured wines of all in this country that produces deeply-hued wines. This is the main red variety for red Vinho Verde.

Wine Region: Nestled at the eastern edge of Galicia in north-west Spain, the Ribeiro DO is split by three rivers. Coto de Gomariz is located in the zone of Ribeiro where the slopes overlook the Avia river and consists of 27 hectares. Shistous, granitic and sandy soils, steep slopes, tiny yields and a unique microclimate make this spot ideal for growing the local varieties which include Treixadura, Godello, Loureiro and Albariño. Winemakers Ricardo Carreiro and Xosé Lois Sebio have introduced biodynamic principles.

Wine Producer: Cistercian monks established the first winery here in the 10th century. The Carreiro family started Coto de Gomariz some thirty years ago and now ferment the fruit of 27 hectares of vineyards in one of the most modern wineries of Galicia. They are one of four wineries belonging to an organisation called Ribeiros do Avia focused on the quality production of wines from local grapes.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

Very deep and bright purple. Scented and very snappy nose of pure dark fruits: crunchy, just-ripe plums. Quite a bit of spice about the nose here, plus a scent of dark chocolate. Perhaps there’s a hint of dark flowers about it. Palate is cool climate, snappy and full of integrated, pretty architectural tannins that are borderline pippy. Very juicy acidity is tucked within, but adds tension as it strives to emerge. Long and busy and snappy. A food wine, without doubt. Duck confit, perhaps? Wagyu beef?? This becomes really pretty intensely grippy…
