2013 Graciano, Vina Zorzal

2013 Graciano, Vina Zorzal
ref. ZORZ130 FEB16

Wine Variety: Graciano is a widespread variety having a great many synonyms, both in Spain (the country with which it is most associated) and elsewhere. Various varieties on Sardinia have proved to be identical - or very closely related to - Graciano and this migration probably occurred when the island was under Spanish rule from the early 14th to the early 18th century. Plantings have been shrinking since the late 19th century, but there is new-found interest in the variety.

Wine Region: Navarra is more commonly known as Navarre in English. The wines of the region are now overlooked in favour of those of its neighbour Rioja to the south, yet both came to prominence at the same time when phylloxera struck the vineyards of Bordeaux and the French travelled south to find a source of wine to replace their shortfall.

Wine  Producer: Viña Zorzal was founded in 1989 and sits at the far southern limit of Navarra in northern Spain, not far from the border with Rioja.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

A deep mulberry red in the glass, this follows up with aromas that are both sweet and fresh. There is a wealth of deliciously dark almost chocolaty plum fruit aromas, plus a heap of dark, dry spice, along with wisps of smoke and a scent like damp earth after a thunder storm. The palate is instantly fresh, of blue and black fruit with some quite upright, fresh tannins that grip minerally at the back. Long. There’s confident structure here and assertive freshness. Could do with some food. I like it a lot.
