2014 Pinotage, Scali

2014 Pinotage, Scali
ref. SCAL140 MAR16

Wine Variety: The variety Cinsault was once known as Hermitage in South Africa and it was this grape that was crossed with Pinot Noir by a professor of viticulture at the University of Stellenbosch in the early part of the last century. Four plants were forthcoming and subsequently named Pinotage, amalgamating the names of its parents.

Wine Region: Grapes were first planted here by the Dutch shortly after their arrival, the first Cape wine being produced in 1652. The next governor of the Cape established the Constantia estate, the sweet wine of which was celebrated on the best tables of Europe and mentioned regularly in prose. Following the advent of democratic process in 1994, exports from South Africa boomed and South Africa is now in the top ten world wine producers by volume.

Wine Producer: Willi and Tania de Waal are fifth generation grape growers in Paardeberg between Paarl and Malmesbury. Schoone Oord, the de Waals' farm, was purchased by Willi's grandfather with a diamond he had unearthed at Kimberley. Tania and Willi started out in 1993 making 50 litres of wine and have grown the business from there.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

Fresh nose that also adds floral touches to its fruit of red and black cherry and a raspberry scent. The palate is cool and elegant and medium weight supported by tacky, sustained tannic grip. This is very long and there's spice at the death. Really good intensity at the back of this. This is really exciting Pinotage (and thus completely unexpected!).
