2014 Sylvaner Schieferkopf, Chapoutier

2014 Sylvaner Schieferkopf, Chapoutier
ref. CHAP140 MAR16

Wine Variety: After examination of Silvaner's DNA and geographical history, it is thought that this variety is an ancient, natural cross between that Jura mainstay Savagnin (also known as Traminer) and an obscure local grape autochthonous to vineyards near Vienna. Thus it is assumed that its origins are Austrian. Silvaner has roots that are common to so many varieties grown today, in that both Pinot and Gouais Blanc appear in its family tree.

Wine Region: German? French?? Alsace has a big dollop of both in everything it does, from food to language and culture: hardly surprising since it has changed hands thirteen times in its history. In a rain-shadow behind the Vosges mountains, Alsace is one of the driest places in France. It is also one of the few appellations allowed to publish the grape variety on its labels. Mono-varietal wines are par for the course here and richly-flavoured ones at that.

Wine Producer: Many of you will know the name Chapoutier from your dealings with wines of the Rhône Valley, where the family have had interests since 1808. They are now making wine in the Roussillon, Australia, Bordeaux, Spain, the Languedoc, Beaujolais, Portugal, Champagne and yes, in Alsace.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

Good colour: limpid pale lemon. A dry nose, but ripe and dense, of some dried apple skins and hints of spice. Touch of melon, perhaps. The palate has good cut and confidence in its lemon and lime fruit and lemon and lime acidity: a freshness that becomes increasingly lemony as its presses on, taking in a welcome hint of bitterness. Nice density with a dry texture underlying. Good with food, this.
