2014 Malvazia Istriana, Kozlovic Winery

2014 Malvazia Istriana, Kozlovic Winery
ref. KOZL140 APR16

Wine Variety: Malvasia is a really unhelpful name that covers a huge range of unrelated grapes, white, pink and black. The name Malvasia comes from Monemvasia, a port in the Peloponnese that had particularly strong trading links with Venice for many hundreds of years; we are very close to the Italian city of Trieste here. Malvasia Istriana is a white variety coming from, as the name suggests, Istria. It is Croatia's third most planted grape variety.

Wine Region: Istria is that uvula-like peninsula almost completely surrounded by Slovenia. Wine making in Croatia began in ancient times: the island of Hvar is believed to have the oldest vineyard in continuous production in the world.

Wine Producer: Kozlovic have their origins in 1904 when their antecedents started making wine in Istria. In 2012 they built a brand new, well-equipped winery that also has a shop and wine bar, so go visit! By all acccounts the Istrian Peninsula is a fabulous place for a holiday.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

The nose offers up lovely aromas of the ripest russet apples. This is essentially a dry wine with enormous length and real mineral interest. It's very mineral, in fact, as well as being very dense and full of character. There's a tannic element here, which makes me suspect that there's been some skin contact during vinification. And this, in turn, makes me suspect this wine would be better with food.
