2014 Narince, Kayra

2014 Narince, Kayra
ref. KAYR140 MAY16

Wine Variety: This is probably the most celebrated of Turkish white grapes. Because of its thin skins, it can have an issue with fungal diseases, thus is better grown in dry climates (like its region of origin in central Turkey). Much Narince (meaning delicate in Turkish) is grown in light soils at altitude and is cultivated both for the table and for wine production.

Wine Region: Less than 5% of Turkey's vineyard area is exploited for wine growing: just as well as, having the fifth greatest vineyard area of any country, the world would be awash with its wines if all the fruit were fermented and bottled. Of what it does produce, only 5% is exported. Turkey can stake a credible claim of containing the world's first wine producing region. Wine production has fluctuated, often conflicting with Islamic culture, yet it was Kemal Ataturk himself who established a winery in 1925 to revive the fortunes of the country's wine production. There was a surge of modernisation in the '90s with the plantings of international varieties, but more recently the government has created laws to control the sale of wine.

Wine Producer: The Kayra winery is based in Anatolia in north-central Turkey. The word Kayra apparently "expresses kindness, benevolence and grace".

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

Nose is a touch shy, although aromas hint at apple skin. This is a spice-rich, apple-y sort of a wine, full and expressive. It's a big wine, too. There's real presence to the russet apple fruit, then a grippy minerality. I find this to be very long and really rather fabulous.
