2014 Loureiro Vinho Verde, Quinta de Curvos

2014 Loureiro Vinho Verde, Quinta de Curvos
ref. CURV140 JUN16

Wine Variety: Indigenous to the Minho region of far north-west Portugal, this variety has been a facilitator in the revival of interest in Vinho Verde. The name is taken from the Portuguese word for laurel, as the wines are said to smell and taste like laurel. However, I have to assume that this is referring to the shrub Laurus nobilis i.e. bay. I often find the smell of bay leaves in the wines. A little Loureiro is planted in Galicia, over the Sapnish border from the Minho, but it is almost always blended with other varieties. There is a red grape called Loureiro Tinto, but it has not been shown to be related to the eponymous white. Loureiro has, though, been proved through DNA analysis to be related to Albariño (Alvarinho in Portugal) and another local grape called Amaral.

Wine Region: Vinho Verde lies to the north of the city of Oporto and, bearing the brunt of Atlantic weather fronts, is a green land of small-holders and many vineyards. Traditionally, vines are trained high up on granite trellises and this to some degrees curbs the threat of various moulds that thrive in such warm and wet conditions. The wines of Vinho Verde cannot exceed 11.5% abv by law. Until relatively recently, most wines emanating from this region were gently fizzy reds from the agricultural end of the scale.

Wine Producer: Curvos wine estate was founded in 1976 by two brothers returning from an expat stint in Angola. Granite soils and the influence of the Atlantic Ocean are the major factors in creating the wine styles here in the 27 hectares of vineyards split between four separate estates within the Curvos stable.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

A pale straw gold. Very nice clean nose with a herbal, bay note that gives away the variety. Apple and pear and a hint of spice of some sort. The palate is clean as a whip, becoming firmer and more direct. Gentle grip eases in from about half way through. There’s a touch of spritz about this, but I left it open in the fridge for a day and the bubble becomes less noticeable. I like it. Nice example.
