2014 Minutolo Rampone, Cantina I Pastini

2014 Minutolo Rampone, Cantina I Pastini
ref. PAST140 AUG16

Wine Variety: Minutolo had long been considered to be a close relation of Fiano, despite Minutolo being an aromatic grape and Fiano not. They have now however been proven to be distinct from one another, with Minutolo having been found to be connected to Muscat of Alexandria among other varieties. Minutolo occurs only in Puglia, the heel of Italy.

Wine Region: Puglia is the long heel of Italy's boot, a flat and fertile region of Mediterranean climate. Much of Puglia is planted with table grapes but other vineyards produce fruit for vermouth production. Pretty much neck-and-neck with Sicily as Italy's second most productive wine region behind the Veneto, Puglia is responsible for a great deal of wine of average quality, but steps are being taken to promote it as a producer of quality wine. The name Puglia comes from the Latin for rainless.

Wine Producer: We're in the Itria Valley here, a landscape of the traditional trulli: conical, whitewashed local houses. 12 hectares are managed by the Carparelli family, who are intent on reviving the fortunes of a number of indigenous grape varieties, including Minutolo.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

Pretty, very clear and pale in the glass. Richly aromatic, but not flashy, showing aromas of gingery spice, rose petals and that very grape-y scent of Muscat. Palate is dry and has a firm core like grapefruit pith that pushes through the long finish, becoming increasingly earthy. This is really solidly mineral and very long. Great presence to this. Dry and rich. Best with food.
