2014 La Copa de Bobal, Bodegas Covinas

2014 La Copa de Bobal, Bodegas Covinas
ref. COVI140 AUG16

Wine Variety: Bobal is widely planted in east-central Spain where it can produce wines that tend towards rusticity; there can be fruit of varying levels of ripeness in the vineyard at harvest time meaning that a proportion of the tannin is potentially under-ripe. This variety can be prized for its ability to produce wines of lower alcohol and better acidity than some other local grapes. Bobal's star is rising as its innate qualities begin to be discovered: this is a good thing as it has been, for many years, considered good for little more than jug wine production.

Wine Region: Utiel-Requena in east-central Spain is a source of grape concentrate, along with its dark red wines made largely from Bobal. In recent times, Bobal has been joined by the ubiquitous Tempranillo, as well as international varieties.

Wine Producer: Coviñas started as a co-operative distillery in 1965, converting wholly to wine production in 2003 with the building of a facility large enough to house 11,000 barrels of wine.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

B. Forget the appalling packaging and focus on the bottle's contents!

Really quite a pale ruby red. Nose shows plenty of earthy nuttiness alongside red and black, rather delicious fruit: sort of cherries-meets-plums aromas. Middle weight and it picks up lots of fine, nutty, integrated tannins quite quickly. Acidity is nicely fresh and internalised and the tannin becomes more upright and fresher. A long wine. And at the death I can find a smear of walnut.
