2015 Montescudaio Rosso, Fattoria Sorbaiano

2015 Montescudaio Rosso, Fattoria Sorbaiano
ref. SORB150 DEC16

Wine variety: This is a blend of Sangiovese and Malvasia Nera. Click on each variety to to to a full description.

Wine region: It is for its regional origins that we have chosen this wine, since it comes from just to the north of Bolgheri and one suspects that, should this have fallen within that region, it would carry a ticket several times as large. This is because Bolgheri lies in the Maremma, a Tuscan coastal strip that used to be little more than a malaria-infested swamp, but since 1940 has been home to Cabernet Sauvignon vines planted by Marchese Incisa della Rocchetta. And these vines produce the great Sassicaia. Since Sassicaia's fame has burgeoned, others have moved in and Bolgheri is now a hotbed of wine makers all attempting to produce varying iterations of Bordeaux-styled wine. Wines here are based on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, although Sangiovese can contribute up to 50% of the blend. Montescudaio is a little known DOC just to the north of Bolgheri in the province of Pisa.

Wine producer: Sorbaiano estate was originally a Roman farmstead, but has been owned by the same family since the 1950s. Ofr the almost 300 hectares owned by the estate, only 27 are home to well-sited vineyards. The other land is used for cereal production and olive orchards.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

Deeply coloured wine that nevertheless is clear and shows no sign of over-extraction. The nose offers a delightful purity of dark and snappy cherry fruit, along with a wisp of almond. Take a sip and the instant impression is one of coolness. And then the structure starts: from very near the front the tannins emerge and become really assertive, albeit fine-grained and nutty. This is a fresh and busy wine of real presence and would certainly be best on the table with some sympathetic food. It’s a delight, however: full of life and vim.
