2015 Sus Scrofa, Celler Pardas

2015 Sus Scrofa, Celler Pardas
ref. PARD150 JAN17

Wine Variety: Sumoll is a died-in-the-wool Spanish variety, the name of which comes from the Latin verb to ripen. It's at home in Cataluña, however an Andalusian grape called Vijariego Negra has now been accepted as identical and it was under this latter name that the grape was introduced to the Canary Islands. Almost all of mainland Spain's planting of this variety are now in Cataluña.

Wine Region: The region of Penedes in Cataluña was given a boost in the late 19th century when the French vineyard was being systematically destroyed by the vine louse Phylloxera. And by the time the louse reached this region, wine growers had already started to diversify their production: the market for Cava had already been established and there had been a move away from heavy, traditional red wines. Then from the 1960s the Torres family started to modernize the Penedes vineyards, planting international grape varieties and making wines that were commercially successful around the world.

Wine Producer: Ramón Parera and Jordi Arnan started Celler Pardas in 1996 and soon afterwards began planting with cuttings from old, indigenous vines. Whilst cultured yeast can make wine making a much easier thing, Ramon and Jordi eschew such things for wild yeasts, thereby crafting much more authentic wines. NB. Sus Scrofa is, by the way, Latin for Wild Boar, hence the label design.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

Interesting colour: a medium plus pinkish ruby. Interesting nose, too, with aromas that aren’t especially familiar. There are fruits both red and black, both domestic and hedgerow.  I could find bits and pieces of raspberry, black plum, a toasty/smoky note, perhaps something vaguely floral: roses, even. Then a sharper, redder scent that’s snappy and fresh: cranberries hidden within the dark plums. Is there some black rubber here, too?? Smells fresh…vital, somehow. It goes in the mouth cool, a bit plush, just medium weight. But quickly things become altogether more serious. Big and very fresh, incisive tannins appear and almost take one’s breath away with their directness, especially allied to equally incisive acidity that’s almost metallic. This is a wine for the dinner table, no doubt. Indeed, it requires food. Yet it is engaging in its vim and race. I’ll opt for belly of pork. Perfect!
