2015 Albariño Barbuntin, Quinta de Couselo

2015 Albariño Barbuntin, Quinta de Couselo
ref. COUS150 MAY17

Wine Variety: Albariño/Alvarinho is a very old variety originating almost certainly in northern Portugal or Galicia immediately to the north. Due to a labeling error that occurred in Galicia, much Albariño stock that has been exported was, in fact, Savagnin Blanc, including a great percentage of the plants sent to Australia. It is likely that this variety is related to Loureiro, another local in this part of the world.

Wine Region: Galicia is the wettest part of Spain and this maritime climate combined with the granitic soils has led tot the production of some of Spain's finest white wines. And they cannot produce too much at present, global demand being vast. In 2012 the vineyard area was over 17 times what it had been in 1987 and is still growing.

Wine Producer: The Cistercian monastery of Santa María la Real lies on the Atlantic coast here in Rias Baixas in Galicia, north eastern Spain. And it was from the monastery that monks journeyed up the local valley and not only planted vines but created the farms to work the vineyards. Quinta de Couselo's origins are as one of these farms. The farm was confiscated and auctioned off in the early 19th century and was subsequently bought, in 1964, by the original owner's descendants. They farmed the estate until 2013 when it was sold to Grandes Pagos Gallegos de Viticultura Tradicional, "a wine-making group whose philosophy consists of developing unique projects in those areas where the native Galician varieties are better expressed."

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

A pale wine of great presence. I found lightly salted green apple aromas and flavours and a pronounced minerality. The freshness of this wine is akin to having lemon juice poured onto one's tongue and there's real density here, but it is far from being what one would call rich. Rather it is spare, incisive and full of expression of place. A delight!
