2015 Marsanne Enseduna, Vignobles Foncalieu

2015 Marsanne Enseduna, Vignobles Foncalieu
ref. FONC150 SEP17

Wine Variety: Marsanne is a properly Rhône-ish variety, taking its name from a town near Montélimar and being one of the principal ingredients of white Hermitage (up to 10% is also allowed in red Hermitage, but is rarely used). It is likely that it is closely related to its regular blending partner Roussanne.

Wine Region: We're west of Béziers here, in the Languedoc, and one of the warmest and driest places in France. This was also one of the first vineyard areas of France; wine has been made here for well over 1,000 years.

Wine Producer: Vignobles Foncalieu is a sizeable co-operative, with vine growers across much of southern France in the Languedoc-Roussillon, Gascony and the Rhône. The co-operative was founded in 1901.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

Pronounced pale lemon in the glass. Faint green tinge. Nice nose: an amalgam of citrus fruit that majors on lemon, and floral scents. There’s a slight talcum aroma and a bit of sweet spice; rhubarb and nut and Lillium regale. And there’s something else: something funkily herbal for which I don’t have a name. There may or may not be a scent like wet paint. Almost instantly fresh and lemon in the mouth, this. Quickly it gathers real density and just powers forwards. The herbal issue rears its head again and the core of the palate is earthily and freshly mineral. Long wine. And the finish is busy. A saline touch. Great sustain here. Apple and rhubarb fruit, with something a fraction toasted through. Lasting, earthily textured grip. Needs food, for sure.
