2009 Mantinia Nassiakos, Semeli

Customer Reviews for 2009 Mantinia Nassiakos, Semeli

5 stars April DD wine

This wine was a real suprise. I find that when in Greece, the local wines always seem fantastic until I bring a couple home then wonder what on earth I was thinking! This wine however is really fresh and well balanced with great fruit, acidity and length, and is really very moorish. Imagine how good this one would be if drunk in Greece. Nice, unusual label too with an artistic study of secateaurs on the front label. I think I'll get a case of this.

Princess Semeli - for whom this winery is named - was impregnated by Zeus. Zeus's wife was understandably put out by their shenanigans and, in a tizzy, killed Semeli. Zeus took the unborn baby (subsequently named Dionysus) from his paramour's corpse and sewed it into his thigh, there to attain full term. Stuff like this occured all the time in Ancient Greece.

Semeli was founded in 1979 with the intention of producing high quality wines that offer good value. The company now manages three wineries: Semeli, the smallest and first; Domaine Helios, an ultra-modern and large facility in the red wine-producing region of Nemea; and this one, Nassiakos, where production is entirely focussed on this grape variety, Moschofilero.

Moschofilero - or Moscophilero - is a pink-skinned grape and in Mantinea we're in the heart of its production. Its name refers to the fruit's attractiveness to sugar-loving insects; the variety is highly aromatic. Rosé and sparkling wines are also made from Moschofilero.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

Tasted at 14.2 degrees C.

Really pale wine, then a superbly rich nose. Concentrated aromas, enticing, of citrus fruit and flowers. Don’t think it’s just the daffodils in the kitchen that make me think this smells of those flowers. Rich grapefruit scents. Gunflint and powdered rocks. And some spice, possibly cardamom.

Entry fresh and really clean. Decent length, with grapefruit acidity and flavours; pink grapefruit even. Decently long, becoming really juicy. I absolutely love this. Drink from this temperature and let it warm. Lovely. Some fine, powdery minerality.
