Customer Reviews for 2008 Mavrud Vinica, Zagreus Winery
 |
Sunshine wine |
Just drank the Mavrud Daily Drinker in our sunny garden with a Sunday barbecue - yum! A great improvement on the old Bulgarian Bull's Blood reds of our youth!!

Zagreus is a new venture, the vineyards only being planted in 1998, the planting being accompanied by the building of a large and modern winery. We're near Plovdiv here, on the fertile plains of the Upper Thracian lowlands i.e. south-central Bulgaria, where the climate is properly continental - summers extremely hot (up to 40 degrees C), winters hard and cold.
The Vinica is 100% Mavrud, a Balkan grape most closely associated with Bulgaria, but also grown in Albania. It is small berried and produces a rich and tannic wine.
After harvest the grapes are dried for 2-3 months - à la Amarone - before vinification. This process shrivels the fruit, removing the water content, leaving concentrated sugar, acidity and tannin.

Tasting Notes:
Very deep ruby purple.
Concentrated, dense and wonderfully pure nose of slightly crunchy black fruit: damson and bramble. The fruit has been sprinkled with dark chocolate and a wisp of spice.
A rich, dark, chocolaty palate, the fruit covering some bold, fine tannins. This has retained beautiful acidity, the whole thing remaining wonderfully fresh. And black, those brambles and damsons joined by black cherries, freshly picked from the orchard. There's a mild earthiness like ground up apple pips. We like this. A lot.
NB. With air, that apple pippiness builds a bit to add a tang of bitterness to the experience, not unwelcome.
