Pinot Noir: the grape of Burgundy, probably rambling around in the trees in the region before the proto-burgundians experienced their vinous epiphany. This is the only example I have ever tried from Portugal!
The Quinta Sant'Ana was inhabited by the von Fürstenberg family until the Portuguese revolution in 1974, at which time they relocated to their native Germany. Ann von Fürstenberg married James Frost and they decided to revive Sant'Ana, which had lain fallow for years. They run the estate together today and make fabulous wines, including an amazingly good Fernao Pires, sent out to Daily Drinker members some months ago (and of which we still have stock, if you're interested). They have managed to find time to have seven sons.
The estate is just 35 kilometres north of Lisbon.

Tasting Notes:
Medium deep cherry ruby
The nose has changed in the 40 minutes since I opened this. First aromas were extraordinarily orange-y. With air, they have become piquant, spicy, smoky, of black cherry. Even after breathing there is something of an orange aroma, as well as some summery floral notes.
The palate is instantly really fresh, showing fruits largely black. Quite warm. There are fine ripe, moderate tannins. This is medium weight, a touch mineral (very fine-grained, paste-like) and extremely persistent. Finish is really busy.
