Variety: Sagrantino di Montefalco is produced in two forms: Montefalco Sagrantino Secco, a dry red, and Montefalco Sagrantino Passito, a sweet red. Traditionally, this grape was almost exclusively vinified in the latter style, or blended with other wines to add strength. Increasingly, however, the class of Sagrantino as a stand-alone variety is being recognised and it is being used to make good quality dry wines. Sagrantino di Montefalco is not obliged by law to come from the commune of Montefalco, but it must be grown in the province of Perugia in Umbria

Region: Montefalco is a small town in the southern Apennines, in Umbria which is south-east of Tuscany. It is here that the work of two significant local producers, Arnaldo Caprai and Paolo Bea (whose wines we offered to Bowes Wine clients some months ago), has led to Sagrantino di Montefalco being promoted to DOCG status.
