2007 Sagrantino di Montefalco, Podere Vaglie

Customer Reviews for 2007 Sagrantino di Montefalco, Podere Vaglie

5 stars Big & elegant

Big, elegant, chocolatey wine, really well made. Regrettably un-Italian to my taste, but I wouldn't hold that against it.

Michael
ref. VAGLI070 FEB12

Variety: Sagrantino di Montefalco is produced in two forms: Montefalco Sagrantino Secco, a dry red, and Montefalco Sagrantino Passito, a sweet red. Traditionally, this grape was almost exclusively vinified in the latter style, or blended with other wines to add strength. Increasingly, however, the class of Sagrantino as a stand-alone variety is being recognised and it is being used to make good quality dry wines. Sagrantino di Montefalco is not obliged by law to come from the commune of Montefalco, but it must be grown in the province of Perugia in Umbria

Region: Montefalco is a small town in the southern Apennines, in Umbria which is south-east of Tuscany. It is here that the work of two significant local producers, Arnaldo Caprai and Paolo Bea (whose wines we offered to Bowes Wine clients some months ago), has led to Sagrantino di Montefalco being promoted to DOCG status. (DOCG - Denominazione de Origine Controllata e Garantita: the highest quality level.)

Producer: In 1997, Vaglie was still a small family firm yet the estate has now expanded to 115 hectares. Their aim is to offer traditional wines of good value

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

A very deep ruby red colour.

Nose is starting to mature and gives off scents of dry spice and ink, plus earth and cherries, both red and black.

The palate is beautifully concentrated, fresh. It quickly becomes serious and structured; rich, serious, fine and tacky tannins drag the tongue forward through the very long finish. I cannot help but think that this is a great deal of wine for the money. This could easily hold its own against a field of top cru bourgeois claret and one wouldn't be ashamed of producing a bottle for a very smart dinner.
