Red Wine  »  Bulgarian Red Wine

When I joined the wine trade I worked in a branch of the UK's biggest wine warehouse chain and I spent my days hemmed in by vast piles of brown wine boxes, each containing Bulgarian wine being sold at a price that could have accounted for very little over and above the cost of bottle, cork, label and capsule. The British wine consumer on a budget couldn't get enough of the £3-and-a-bit Cabernet Sauvignons and cheaper yet reds and whites made from indigenous varieties.

Bulgarian viticulture boasts a 3,000 year history, the vineyards taking a break from wine production during the period of the Ottoman empire, instead being used for growing table grapes.
