Grape Varieties - Aglianico

Aglianico

This is a highly masculine variety in many respects; the fruit is dark and potent. Aglianico is quite capable of producing extremely high quality wines.

This is an early-budding variety and it ripens late, ergo it is best grown, as here, in a land of long summers.

It has been argued that the name Aglianico is derived from Ellenico - Italian for Hellenic - as this has always been believed to have had its origins in Greece. However, this now seems extremely unlikely and it is now thought that the name is derived from the Spanish phrase "of the plain" (the Spanish occupied central Italy for a period in the 15th and 16th centuries).

Signature Style

Signature Style

Aglianico produces wines of deep colour and rich structure. If mis-handled, the fruit is capable of producing wines of uncomfortably high and awkward tannin. The wine usually retains excellent freshness.

Spice, dark fruits and chocolate can all be found in Aglianico wines.

Aglianico can be found in various locations across southern Italy from Campania in the west to Molise in the east. However, the most celebrated examples are, without doubt, the towering, extremely age-worthy wines, Taurasi in Campania and Aglianico del Vulture in Basilicata.
