Grape Varieties - Arneis

Arneis

Arneis originated here, in Piemonte, where for years it was used to soften the mighty red wines of Barolo. Indeed, one of its local synonyms is Barolo Bianco.

It is a tricky variety to get right, in a wine making sense, the fruit prone to becoming over-ripe, quickly losing acidity. The grape's fickleness in the vineyard is reflected in its name, which loosely translates from the local dialect as "little rascal". Modern techniques in both vineyard and winery have been kind to Arneis, allowing producers to render clean and rather beautiful wine from their fruit.
