2018 Savatiano, Mylonas

2018 Savatiano, Mylonas
ref. MYLO180 SUM20

Wine Variety: Savatiano is the most widely-planted vine in Greece. It most likely comes from Attica on the Greek mainland, but is also grown to some extent in Kefalonia, the Peloponnese and the Cyclades. It is traditionally used to make Retsina, but has great potential for the production of table wine.

Wine Region: Mylonas are based in Attica in mainland Greece. This is among the most ancient of wine producing countries, vine growing having originally been spread to Italy and France by Greek traders. Greece is well-placed to exploit the world's new-found interest in wines from off the beaten track, having a wealth of indigenous grape varieties and a diversity of micro-climates and soils. The vineyards of Attica cover some 6,500 hectares, 80% of which are white grapes.

Wine Producer: The history of Mylonas starts in 1917 when the grandfather of current owners, Antonis, would grow vines and ferment his wine in amphorae. The modern era really started here in 2000 when the latest generation of the family took over, building a new, modern winery.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

A pretty thing in the glass this: a pale, vibrant yellow gold. The nose is dense with ripe russet apple skins and attendant spice. There seems to be a very mineral aromatic component here, like crushed limestone combined with dried white flowers. But it’s a dry thing and not fruit-forward. The palate gives a fleshiness of texture that reminds me of unoaked Chardonnay a bit. And through that marches the earthy mineral structure to a long finish that gathers something rather granular. There’s easy, lasting grip here. It’s a wine of subtle intent, not shouting about itself. But if one goes to look for it, there’s a great deal here…
