2019 Arinto Vale do Homem, Quintas do Homem

2019 Arinto Vale do Homem, Quintas do Homem
ref. QUIN190 SUM20

Wine Variety: Arinto is a white Portuguese grape, the home turf of which is Bucelas just to the north of Lisbon. A wine of this region, made from Arinto and Esgana Cao (dog strangler), was popular in Victorian Britain, where it was known as Portuguese Hock, giving rise to the belief that Arinto is related to Riesling (it is not). Arinto is grown in other parts of northern Portugal, including Vinho Verde country.

Wine Region: Vinho Verde lies to the north of the city of Oporto and, bearing the brunt of Atlantic weather fronts, is a green land of small-holders and many vineyards. Traditionally, vines are trained high up on granite trellises and this to some degrees curbs the threat of various moulds that thrive in such warm and wet conditions. The wines of Vinho Verde cannot exceed 11.5% abv by law. Until relatively recently, most wines emanating from this region were gently fizzy reds from the agricultural end of the scale.

Wine Producer: Nuno and his father, Antonio, work the vines of their two vineyards, Quinta do Veiga and Quinta do Paço (making up the Quintas do Homem), where they grow predominately Loureiro and Arinto. Ana, their long term winemaker, is a fierce taskmaster, demanding quality fruit that enables her to deliver the pure, fine and elegant Vinho Verdes that Nuno expects. It's very much a family exercise with Nuno and his father working the vineyards, Nuno's mother preparing delicious, traditional Portuguese dishes for visitors and Ana, an adopted family member, making sure the wines are always perfect.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

Aromas are beguiling here, of rich apple and pear fruit nuanced by an almond nut scent. The palate is finely mineral and is underpinned by green orange/grapefruit acidity. This is a long thing and a highly structured one. And there's a piquant minerality to be found at the death: almost a lavic/pumice texture. This is really very delicious white wine.
