2020 Picpoul de Pinet, EMB
Wine Variety: Picpoul de Pinet is another tangled web of a variety, there being black, white and "grey" examples of Picpoul, all sharing the same DNA. This is clearly a very old variety; earliest mention in writing is of the black version in the 14th century. The Spanish red grape Picapoll is the same as the French Picpoul, but Picapoll Blanco is altogether separate from the French white Picpoul (or Piquepoul). Picpoul Blanc retains good freshness even in vineyards heated by the Mediterranean sun and Picpoul is one of the 13 authorized varieties in Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
Wine Region: The Languedoc lies in south central France. Taking in the three départments of Aube, Hérault and Gard, it stretches from the Rhône in the east to the Roussillon (with which it is often associated) in the west. Here are planted something like a quarter of all French vineyards. Much of the wine produced here is non-AC i.e. the region is responsible for a great deal of what the Americans would call “jug wine”. Residents of the region at one time spoke Occitan, hence the name Langue d'Oc.
Wine Producer: This wine was bottled by a negociant firm called EMB.

Tasting Notes:
Very pale and bright greenish lemon. Nose at c. 9 degrees C is light, but delicious-smelling, of ripe melon and pear, with bits of pieces of nut and flowers. There’s a hint of toasted spice as well. Palate has a lovely weight of peary fruit on entry: a real ripe, very slightly oily texture. There’s a flavour of lemon and some powdered-rock structure, with the acidity of Golden Delicious apples. A hint of toasted nut creeps in towards the back. Nicely long and very delicious.
#3wordtastingnote: melon, nut, concentrated
