2016 Bairrada Tinto, Ataide Semedo

2016 Bairrada Tinto, Ataide Semedo
ref. SEME160

Wine Variety: Baga has, of late, become rather à la mode. What is certain is that it is among Iberia's greatest red varieties, capable of producing wines of great structure, interest and longevity. Baga offers the twin complications of susceptibility to various fungal diseases, plus late ripening. Under-ripe Baga is a loathsome thing: swingeingly acidic and thin. Yet leave it on the vine to become fully ripe and one can risk losing one's crop to mould. Baga simjply means "berry" in Portuguese.

Wine Region: Bairrada is a coastal region south of Oporto. In 1756 the then prime minister of Portugal gave orders that all of Bairrada's vineyards be dug up in order to alleviate instances of port wine being adulterated. It took a very long time to recover, with the vineyards only being classified in 1979. As with much of the country, this is a region of smallholdings and co-operatives. And the vineyard is more-or-less mono-varietal: Baga making up virtually 100% of the plantings. Bairrada means "place of clay".

Wine Producer: Ataide Semedo has worked at some of the biggest and best Bairrada producers over the years and now farms 5 hectares of his own. The man is a traditionalist, proudly displaying the legend NOT ON FACEBOOK on his labels.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

We first stocked the 2013 vintage of this wine. It has proved to be one of our most popular reds so, as part of our 10th Birthday celebrations, we have restocked with the latest vintage, 2016. The tasting note and video below are currently for the 2013 vintage but will be updated with the new one shortly.

A deliciously lively nose of snappy red apple and raspberry fruit, all coming across as a touch saline. Palate is cool and very apply; very saline-fresh. The very fine tannins are completely internalised. This is a very long wine to a very juicy finish. This is fabulous. Quite a natural-seeming thing that gains in intensity.
