2015 Cococciola, Cantina Frentana

2015 Cococciola, Cantina Frentana
ref. FREN150 SEP16

Wine Variety: Very little is known about this strangely-named white grape variety, Cococciola. It is largely grown in the Abruzzo, plus a little in northern Puglia. It is traditionally blended (in minor part) into Trebbiano d'Abruzzo. There are a great many clones of this variety, indicating a fondness among the local population for its cultivation.

Wine Region: Abruzzo lies between Le Marche and Puglia on central Italy's east coast. It has a mountainous landscape and its vineyard area is dominated by the Trebbiano d'Abruzzo and Montepulciano varieties. Abruzzo is enjoying a slow-burn renaissance in its wine making.

Wine Producer: Cantina Frentana is a co-operative that vinifies the fruit of 500 vine growers, working vineyards in which the torridity of summer is mitigated by the breezes from the Adriatic Sea. Frentana have an obsession with the traditional varieties of the region, believing them to be much more interesting than imported grapes.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

Pale in colour, with some CO2 on opening. Quite pale in aroma, too: a wisp of something herbal and citrus fruit and apple. The palate has nice weight of fresh fruit to it: real presence in the mouth through which comes a rapier cut of acidity, which is well covered. The finish has something green about it. A nicely long wine and a juicy one.
