2014 Dry Furmint, Megyer

2014 Dry Furmint, Megyer
ref. MEGY140 OCT16

Wine Variety: There can be little doubt that Furmint's origins are Hungarian. First mention of the variety was as far back as the 16th century and the fact that there are differing forms of Furmint bearing the same DNA in Hungarian vineyards suggest that it has been present here for very many years. Furmint is the principal grape of the great sweet wines of Tokaji, the other being its progeny, Harslevelu. Furmint is a very high-quality grape, capable of producing intense, complex wines of great age-worthiness.

Wine Region: We're in Tokaji here, in north-east Hungary, and the oldest classified vineyards in the world (denominated in 1700). World renowned in the 17th and, especially, 18th centuries, the wines of this region fell from favour in the 20th century, particularly during the Soviet occupation, when quantity was prioritised over quality.

Wine Producer: Château Megyer and its sister company Pajzos were among the first to be privatised following Soviet occupation in 1991. The soils here are heavy volcanic clay and the Megyer wines produced from them are made in large cellars under the castle at Rakoczi. Both Pajzos and Megyer are owned by Jean-Louis Lagorde, owner of Château Clinet in Pomerol.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

Wow! Lots going on on the nose here. Complex aromas that take in melon and lemon and delicious apples, along with crushed herb leaves. The palate has fabulous intensity and there's fine tension between the fruit and fresh, firm acidity. There's lemon freshness right through this. Substantial length and real presence. I like this wine very much, as you might have gathered.
