2013 Eleivera Touriga Nacional, Chapoutier

2013 Eleivera Touriga Nacional, Chapoutier
ref. CHAP130 OCT16

Wine Variety: A vigorous plant, Touriga Nacional has gained the reputation of being Portugal's noblest variety. It is the backbone of port and is widely grown in the Douro Valley, despite the belief that its origins lie in Dão to the south. (There is a village in Dão named Tourigo thought to have given its name to the variety.) Touriga Nacional is planted increasingly widely in Portugal. It is also cultivated in Spain, California, Washington, New Zealand, Argentina and Brazil.

Wine Region: The Douro river rises in western Spain (where it is known as the Duero) then cleaves through the granite mountains of northern Portugal before travelling west to the sea by Porto. One of the oldest classified vineyard regions, the Douro was, for many years, solely responsible for the fortified port wines. It is only relatively recently that still red wines - and more recently yet, still dry white wines - have been produced here. Granite and schist dominate the soils, but altitude on the high slopes can, to some extent, mitigate the torridity of the Portuguese summers.

Wine Producer: For two centuries, the house of Chapoutier has been producing fine wines from the classic appellations of the Rhône Valley. More recently, the firm has started bottling wines as far afield as Australia, the south of France and, now, Portugal. All wines are grown organically or biodynamically. And all labels include information in braille.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

A surprisingly translucent red appearance in the glass; TN is often black as yer hat. The aromas are surprising, too: clear red fruits amongst the black; floral bits and pieces. Sniff longer and other nuances float up: a rooty liquorice/chocolate note. The surprising elements continue on the palate. The wine is just medium weight, remarkably light on its feet and welcomingly fresh. It lacks that slabby character that one so often finds in varietal Touriga Nacional. Then the finish offers a wealth of tannin and that tannin is a touch dry. Drink this with food, preferably fatty meat dishes. Pork belly would be ideal. Or lamb. I like this wine!
