2015 Sauvignon Blanc, Zorz

2015 Sauvignon Blanc, Zorz
ref. ZORZ151 JAN17

Wine Variety: Well, it's Sauvignon Blanc, innit? Darling of the wine bars and ladies who lunch... and pretty much everyone else with a thirst on a hot day for that matter. The origins of Sauvignon Blanc are almost certainly Bordelais and from there it spread to the satellite appellations of that region and onwards to the Loire, where the most celebrated mono-varietal Sauvignons are cultivated: Pouilly-Fumé, Sancerre and their less well-known neighbours Reuilly, Quincy and Menetou-Salon. DNA analysis of Sauvignon Blanc has thrown up some fascinating tidbits: with Cabernet Franc it is a parent of Cabernet Sauvignon; it is probably related to both Traminer and Chenin Blanc. Its natural acidity is employed in Sémillon blends to counter that grape's propensity to flab. It has, of course, adapted very well to the New World, helped by clones that deal with its natural weaknesses: excessive vigour and susceptibility to fungal diseases.

Wine Region: Wine was being produced in Slovenia in pre-Roman times and was continued through the Middle Ages by the Church. Slovenia now has one of the highest per capita wine consumption figures in the world, although 10% of production is exported. Focus is very much on quality wine, with some regions - Primorska in particular - venturing into the realm of natural and orange wine.

Wine Producer: We are in Primorska here, close to the Italian border, in the Vipavska Dolina (Vipava Valley), where Zorz work 25 hectares of vines, including the local Zelen (previous Daily Drinker offering) and Pinella (future Daily Drinker offering?!), as well as international varieties. Their wine business dates back to the 17th century.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

Pale lemon yellow in colour, nicely clear. This needs a moment’s air after pouring, but then continues to open up for 15 minutes and more as it breathes and warms slightly from fridge temperatures. This is densely pungent: loaded with herbal Sauvignon aromas that are borderline exotic. In fact, I can find kaffir lime leaves, as well as grapefruit pith and lime and even black pepper. There is evidently spice along with those herbs. The palate also has an exotic aspect. It’s a dry wine but an exuberant one, with green orange acidity backing the fruit. And that pepperiness reappears on the palate, as well as an earthy texture like fine tilth. And absorbing wine! Really interesting iteration of SB!
