2015 Rkaciteli Special Selection, Tikves Winery

2015 Rkaciteli Special Selection, Tikves Winery
ref. TIKV150 MAR17

Wine Variety: Clearly, Rkatsiteli (yes, Rkatsiteli even though this wine is labelled Rkaciteli) is a very ancient vine indeed (although hypotheses that Noah planted it after the flood are unsubstantiated). What is known is that it is genetically very close to the wild vines of Georgia, giving rise to conjecture that it was domesticated directly from the wild. It is the most widely planted grape variety in Georgia. Being resistant to cold temperatures, Rkatsiteli has been taken up by vine growers in Russia and ex-soviet republics, as well as Romania, Bulgaria, China and some of the chillier parts of the US.

Wine Region: The Republic of Macedonia is a landlocked country that used to be part of Yugoslavia. Indeed, greater Macedonia also covered parts of Greece and Bulgaria, too The Greeks still dispute the use of the name. 85% of the country's vineyard area is within the central River Vardar valley; 41% in Tikves, from where comes this wine. It is now thought that this region is the cradle of global wine production. Recent investment has given rise to a resurgence of quality in the Republic of Macedonia.

Wine Producer: Tikves Winery opened its doors 130 years ago and is apparently the largest and oldest winery in south-east Europe. Bought in 2003 by the Texas-based M6 Investment Group, Tikves has been the beneficiary of €30M of new investment and is now a fully modernised winery.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

A pale thing in the glass, this, and the revelation that it is but 12% abv, fills one with hope and anticipation. Nose does not disappoint, as it's alive with interest. There's a hint of cool ferment in the wisp of pear drop, but citrus and orchard fruit also put in an appearance, as well as a delightful herbal note. There's even a floral scent. I sipped it and found a subtle, dry wine made for the table. A dense thing and a long one, full of interest.
