2016 Samos Grand Cru - 50cl, Union of Winemaking Cooperatives of Samos

Wine Variety: This is made 100% from Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains: by far the most characterful and interesting of the Muscat tribe, which is a pretty substantial family grouping. As its name suggests, this variety has properly small bunches, containing diminutive grapes and, in terms of its colouring, can be most things between yellow and really deep red.
Wine Region: The island of Samos is in the eastern Aegean, very close to the coast of Turkey. There is reason to believe that wine has been cultivated here for 3,000 years or more.
Wine Producer: Muscat is grown on the island on small terraces at up to 800 metres above sea level, in this instance by the rather prosaically named Union of Samos Cooperatives. Founded in 1934, EOSS (as it is no less prosaically known) is an amalgamation of 26 individual local co-operatives.

Tasting Notes:
A positive faintly coppery pale yellow colour. The nose is where this gets serious, all loaded with stem ginger as it is. There’s a wisp of lychee and extreme grapeiness, along with lots of sweet spice. It smells delicious! The palate has a thread of toastiness – almost like the singed crust of a cake – which keeps this from coming across as too sweet. And there are those lovely flavours of ginger and spiced grapes in the midst of which, a sudden puff from the rose garden. A delicious thing to be poured with cheese or pudding, over ice or even with a splash of soda.
