2016 Tinto Velasco Ocho y Media, Finca la Estacada

2016 Tinto Velasco Ocho y Media, Finca la Estacada
ref. LAES160 NOV17

Wine Variety: There's not a great deal known about this variety, Tinto Velasco. It is presumed autochthonous in central Spain - Castilla-La Mancha - where it has a number of pseudonyms. Rather awkwardly, Tinto Velasco is also a local synonym for Alicante Bouschet, also known as Garnacha Tintorera...

Wine Region: This is the arid central mesa of Spain and the largest single grape growing region of Europe: a vineyard area that had dwindled to a mere 160,000 hectares by 2012. It's dry here and can be extremely hot, too. However, it can also be very cold, both at night and in winter. Airen is the most widely-planted variety here: a pretty neutral white variety. Much of La Mancha's production is either made into industrial alcohol or is used in brandy production.

Wine Producer: The Finca la Estacada is located just 40 minutes from Madrid and now boasts a restaurant, hotel and vinotherapy spa. It was originally a farm owned by the descendants of the widow of King Ferdinand VII, Maria Christina of the Two Sicilies, but was purchased by the current owners in the middle of the last century. Finca la Estacada opened as a winery in 2001 and, whilst it does produce white wines, it concentrates on producing red wines.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

N.B. This wine has a slight spritz to it. Do not be alarmed!

A nicely pure, lightly cocoa-inflected nose of dark bramble fruit with a hint of something redder. Smells pretty domestic, anyway, with perhaps something of the sweet shop about it. Hazelnut note, possibly. Quite a cool wine, quickly taking on pretty tangy acidity. And the tannin through the second half becomes tacky and quite assertive, dominating the fruit somewhat and gripping firmly at the finish. It’s a cool wine. I wondered whether it had been picked quite early. Spiciness to the structure at the death. And a touch of dryness, too. Interesting wine that requires big, but relatively plain meat dishes. Touch saline at the death.
