2014 Iacob, Davino

2014 Iacob, Davino
ref. DAVI140 DEC17

Wine Variety: It seems that Feteasca Regala is indigenous to Moldavia and was probably domesticated from a wild vine. It's name means "black young lady" and it produces some of Romania's finest wines. The fact that there are several distinct Feteascas intimates that this is an old variety.

Wine Region: This coastal part of Romania - Dragasani - was settled by Greeks in the seventh century BC. It is possible that wine vines were introduced at that time. Roman occupation occurred around 100AD and thereafter vine growing was widely established. American, hybrid vines, outlawed under EU legislation, are still planted quite widely in Romania, but the country has given an undertaking to pull up all these by 2014. Do not under-estimate Romania's potential for producing high quality wines of all colours and styles: the future is golden! Dealu Mara in the Carpathian Hills just to the north of Bucharest means "big hill" and produces among the best reds in the country.

Wine Producer: Davino is one of the finest producers in what is one of the finest wine producing regions of Romania.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

Opaque mulberry red. The nose is really snappy and indicative of Feteasca Neagra, I think: domestic dark plum fruit, touch creamy, and lots of spice. Creamy-cool entry, just medium weight, then minerally fresh grip that tightens through and powers forward, becoming highly intentful, a touch saline. Long wine. True to its origins. I would be happy to believe this is 100% Feteasca Neagra, to be honest; it is actually a Feteasca/Cabernet blend.

N.B. This tasting note was taken some months ago and, retasting this wine, it had, I thought, become rather more Cabernet and international. However, I have decided to go ahead and send this out to Daily Drinker members (despite the fact that it is a blend and the DD doesn't generally "do" blends) because it is demonstrative of exactly where Romanian wine making is at present i.e. much more up-to-date than many would suspect!
