2015 Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, Viticolo Venea

2015 Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, Viticolo Venea
ref. VENE150 DEC17

Wine Variety: Ah, ampelography... It seems that this Trebbiano is possibly unrelated to any of the other Trebbianos (of which there is quite a clutch). Or maybe it is. No one seems to know. It might be related to a Pugliese grape called Bombino Bianco. Or not. DNA profiling evidently required here!

Wine region: The Abruzzo lies on Italy's eastern seaboard between the Marche and Puglia. It's a mountainous place and despite the fact that one of Italy's most serious red grapes - Montepulciano - is grown here in abundance, the Abruzzo is mostly known as a producer of "jug" wine.

Wine producer: Viticolo Vinea is a small operation (less than 10 acres) run by the Paolucci family.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

A very pretty pale and clear gold colour in the glass. And aromas that accurately describe the variety. I can find a note like almond skins backed by fruit aromas of ripe lemons; hints of green orange and a putty-like spice. There’s more than a hint of mint about the aromas, too. Nicely rich and ripe in the mouth, yet quickly takes on apply acidity that itself takes on a mineral juiciness later on. A long wine that finally gathers itself into a citrus lift at the death. A delicious peary fruit is allied to a distinct nuttiness: hazelnuts, perhaps. Long. Lovely weight, drive, energy. Super stuff…
