2016 Dafni, Lyrarakis

2016 Dafni, Lyrarakis
ref. LYRA160 JAN18

Wine Variety: A grape that comes from - and is only found on - the island of Crete. The name means "laurel" and the wine from this variety is believed to smell of laurel (or possibly (as we think with the Loureiro grape of Portugal) bay, which is also a member of the laurel family). Dafni fruit has thick skins so is resistant to disease.

Wine Region: The wines of Candia (as Crete was then known, as a part of the Republic of Venice) were especially popular in the Middle Ages. Crete's a big place: the main grape-growing area lies near Heraklion and is the second biggest vineyard area in the whole country. Many vineyards here are at altitude: up to almost 900 meters above sea level.

Wine Producer: Lyrarakis was founded in 1966 and has long been a champion of obscure local varieties (I suspect you'll be seeing more as Daily Drinker samples before long). There are stone wine presses dating from the 14th century around the winery which only just scratches the surface of the wine growing history on the island.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

This has warmed quite a bit since I recorded the video note and now gives off quite dense, rather savoury and earthy aromas. There’s that smell like the dried skins of russet apples and the nutty putty impression remains. I can find something like dried herbs, too. The palate is understated and also really savoury/earthy. Is there tannin here? I rather think so in the fine paste that adheres to my teeth. It’s fresh and has something of the saline thing that I noticed when the wine was colder, especially at the finish, which is nicely long. Much more presence at this temperature. A rich-but-dry mouthful, the dryness being added to by the tannic impression. This one could stand food: cheese; chicken, maybe even pork...
