2015 Kotsifali, Lyrarakis

2015 Kotsifali, Lyrarakis
ref. LYRA150 MAR18

Wine Variety: It seems likely that Kotsifali originated in Crete or somewhere nearby. It is the second-most widely planted variety on Crete.

Wine Region: The wines of Candia (as Crete was then known, as a part of the Republic of Venice) were especially popular in the Middle Ages. Crete's a big place: the main grape-growing area lies near Heraklion and is the second biggest vineyard area in the whole country. Many vineyards here are at altitude, up to almost 900 metres above sea level.

Wine Producer: Lyrarakis was founded in 1966 and has long been a champion of obscure local varieties (this is the second Lyrarakis wine that The Daily Drinker has purchased this year, the other being a dry white made from Dafni). There are stone wine presses dating from the 14th century around the winery which only just scratches the surface of the wine growing history on the island.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

The nose is dry and subtle, without much overt fruitiness. It does show some dark and domestic fruit though, and that is underpinned by an earthy rootiness. Aromas are a touch nutty, too. Palate is mid-weight and offers something of an easy-drinking experience. An unflashy wine, contained within itself, but nonetheless rather delicious. It says "Drink Me!"

#3wordtastingnote: subtle, mid-weight, delicious
