2016 Plyto, Lyrarakis

2016 Plyto, Lyrarakis
ref. LYRA161 APR18

Wine Variety: It seems Plyto's origins lie in the island of Crete where it was all-but saved from extinction by the firm of Lyrarakis, which planted 4 acres of vines at altitude - 400 metres - on the island. Total global plantings amount to somewhere between 5 and 7 hectares, all on Crete.

Wine Region: The wines of Candia (as Crete was then known, as a part of the Republic of Venice) were especially popular in the Middle Ages. Crete's a big place: the main grape-growing area lies near Heraklion and is the second biggest vineyard area in the whole country. Many vineyards here are at altitude, up to almost 900 metres above sea level.

Wine Producer: Lyrarakis was founded in 1966 and has long been a champion of obscure local varieties (this is the third Lyrarakis wine that The Daily Drinker has purchased this year - try the white Dafni and the red Kotsifali). There are stone wine presses dating from the 14th century around the winery which only just scratches the surface of the wine growing history on the island.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

A very pale wine that demonstrates perfectly the benefits of allowing a white wine to warm slightly after its removal from the fridge. From a rather undemonstrative cold-start it starts opening into something really characterful. Beautiful scents and flavours of ripe apples mix with the spice and a herbal lick. The palate is fresh and has something almost a touch tannic about it. Is it a little saline too? This is exciting stuff from Lyrarakis. A rara avis of a grape being shown off full well.

#3wordtastingnote: scented, apple, fresh
