2014 Kalecik Karasi, Vinolus

2014 Kalecik Karasi, Vinolus
ref. VINO140 JUN18

Wine Variety: Not a great deal of information about this grape. Its name means simply black grape from Kalecik, an area near Ankara in Turkey and it is assumed to be autochthonous to the country.

Wine Region: Less than 5% of Turkey's vineyard area is exploited for wine growing: just as well as, having the fifth greatest vineyard area of any country, the world would be awash with its wines if all the fruit were fermented and bottled. Of what it does produce, only 5% is exported. Turkey can stake a credible claim of containing the world's first wine producing region. Wine production has fluctuated, often conflicting with Islamic culture, yet it was Kemal Ataturk himself who established a winery in 1925 to revive the fortunes of the country's wine production. There was a surge of modernisation in the '90s with the plantings of international varieties, but more recently the government has created laws to control the sale of wine.

Wine Producer: To say Vinolus is a boutique producer of wine is an understatement: annual production is but 10,000 bottles in total, all organic. Vines here are planted at altitude and on volcanic soils in central Anatolia.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

Interesting thing in the glass, this. Some maturity is evident in its garnet hue, but there’s good intensity to the colour, even though it is barely medium deep. Good clean nose that contains a pile of spices and a whiff of fresh orange juice. There’s decent tang to the red, nutty-inflected fruit. This is medium-weight in the mouth, going in nutty and quite plush, then quite quickly picking up a piquant-fresh minerality. Highly integrated, fine, nutty tannins appear in a finish that becomes a tad warm. It dries satisfyingly at the death. It’s a resolved wine of nice freshness and cherry-ish red fruit. And I would drink it with simply-cooked meat dishes or vegetables.

#3wordtastingnote: fresh, blackberry, hazelnut
