2017 Roter Veltliner Eisenhut, Eschenhof Holzer

2017 Roter Veltliner Eisenhut, Eschenhof Holzer
ref. ESCH170 JUL18

Wine Variety: That Roter Veltliner is an old variety is evidenced by its spontaneous (i.e. wild) crossings with both Silvaner and Savagnin, producing Neuberger and Rotgipfler, among others. Mildly irksome is the fact that Roter Veltliner is unrelated to Gruner Veltliner. Although total acreage is shrinking in Austria, this variety is more than capable of producing really serious wines and wines that will age.

Wine Region: Austria's vineyards are all at the eastern end of the country i.e. a very long way from the ski resorts that are all situated in the west. Wagram is no different, lying on the left bank of the Danube near Vienna. Soils in this vineyard are composed of layers of rock covered by red gravel and loess.

Wine Producer: Arnold Holzer was born in 1987 and took on his family winery in 2010: the fifth generation to do so.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

One of those wines the appearance of which belies its character. It looks pale and reserved, but the nose has a dense complexity of summer garden mixed with touches of spice to the orchard fruit, ripe aromas. It smells fascinating. And then the palate, offers a rich experience: dense and spicy like the nose and that slightly exotic floral character that I picked up when smelling the wine. Acidity is quite soft, but a mineral quality adds structure to the finish before a squirt of acidity right at the death that freshens everything up. Lovely, unusual wine.

#3wordtastingnote: complex, exotic, unusual
