2017 Palomino, Barbadillo

2017 Palomino, Barbadillo
ref. BARB170 SEP18

Wine Variety: This is the grape of sherry, thriving in the heat and the white albariza soils found around Jerez. It is also planted quite widely in Rueda, a region that was at one time intended to be a major producer of fortified, sherry-type wines. There are Palomino vineyards in Galicia and, in the 16th century, it was transplanted to the Canary Islands where wines from the variety are starting to gain a real reputation. Slow brand building, then...

Wine Region: This white wine is from vineyards in Cadiz, the southern coastal port town near Jerez.

Wine Producer: Barbadillo is a major sherry producer, but also bottle some still wines, both red and white. It's an old firm, having bottled its first Manzanilla in 1821, and is located in Sanlucar de Barrameda, from where Manzanilla comes. The company has diversified and now has wineries in Ribera del Duero and Somontano, this latter in the foothills of the Pyrénees.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

Pale green-ish wheat colour. Rich, ripe, pure and clean fruit nose of pears and dried pear slices and a hint of dry spice. Smells delicious: not complex, just very tasty. Very nice ripe fruit on the palate: a sunny pear beginning that gradually becomes something drier, less overt. There’s a bit of spicy, fresh structure within that creates lift and definition towards the back. Right at the death there’s a twist of bitterness: a sort of quinine twang. Quite long enough. Not a complex pleasure, but a pleasure nevertheless!

#3wordtastingnote: pear, spice, pleasure
