2017 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Le Salare, SABA

2017 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Le Salare, SABA
ref. LESA170 NOV18

Wine Variety: Montepulciano is an important red variety of central and southern Italy and is widely grown from Tuscany down through to Puglia. A little is cultivated in Malta, Australia, New Zealand and California. Montepulciano is marketed both as a mono-varietal wine (i.e. made from unblended Montepulciano) or blended with other grapes, principally to soften this variety's assertive character. The most celebrated clone of Montepulciano is called Africa (I like to think this due to the bunches being shaped like that continent, but this has never been confirmed to me).  The town of Montepulciano and the wine found there - Vino Nobile de Montepulciano - is nothing to do with this variety, being the domain of the rather nobler Sangiovese.

Wine Region: The Abruzzo lies on Italy's eastern seaboard between the Marche and Puglia. It's a mountainous place and despite the fact that one of Italy's most serious red grapes - Montepulciano - is grown here in abundance, the Abruzzo is mostly known as a producer of "jug" wine.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

Deep in the glass, but not midnight-opaque. And the nose offers a good deal of Montepulciano character in its bramble-and-earth aromas. Elements of black cherry creep in and the whole effect is one of fresh and snappy dark fruit. Smells delicious. The palate proves that this is Montepulciano designed for easy drinking, yet not lacking its varietal stamp. It has super acidity running right through it, over which is layered the snappy-dark brambly fruit. That signal earthiness of the grape is present, but as a nuance, not dominating the experience. One could almost drink this on its own.
