2017 Xynisteri Petritis, Kyperounda Winery

2017 Xynisteri Petritis, Kyperounda Winery
ref. KYPE170
Wine Variety: Cyprus's most widely-planted white grape variety, Xynisteri, also appears to be autochthonous to the island. It could, however, be the same as a variety grown in Israel: Zitania. And this could be why one of its synonyms is Hebron Blanc.

Wine Region: Wine production in Cyprus takes up 8% of the island's farming land and is largely concentrated in the southern, Greek sector. There are records of Cypriot wine dating from as far back as the 12th century. Most vineyards here are planted on the Troodos Mountains where they find sufficient altitude and rainfall to successfully grow fruit for wine making.

Wine Producer: Kyperounda's vineyards, planted at 1,400 metres, are among some of the loftiest in the world. The winery was set up in the late 1990s by a group of local wine growers who determined to build a modern winery; the building is therefore on three levels and uses gravity for moving juice and wine around, the act of pumping believed to be detrimental to the liquid.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

We first stocked the 2015 vintage of this wine. It proved to be one of our most popular whites so, as part of our 10th Birthday celebrations, we have restocked with the latest vintage. The tasting note and video below are currently for the 2015 vintage but will be updated with the new one shortly.

Pretty colour, a pale, definite yellow gold. Lovely nose. It’s loosened up at this temperature (18 degrees C) but still the green apple crackle and ripe pear too. In addition, I can find scents of rhubarb and spice and something a touch floral that I hadn’t noticed when it was colder. Palate is rich, of good density, but remains light on its feet. Best serve colder than this as it’s lost some focus with warming. A herbal thing going on here, but rather indefinable beyond that. Just a lovely white wine of real presence and freshness. It finishes in a slightly saline twist. Freshness retained at all times here. A lovely wine.

#3wordtastingnote: pear, rhubarb, freshness
