2017 Furmint Egy Kis, Barta Pince

2017 Furmint Egy Kis, Barta Pince
ref. BART170 JAN19

Wine Variety: There can be little doubt that Furmint's origins are Hungarian; first mention of the variety was as far back as the 16th century and the fact that there are differing forms of Furmint bearing the same DNA in Hungarian vineyards suggest that it has been present here for very many years. Furmint is the principal grape of the great sweet wines of Tokaji, the other being its progeny, Harslevelu. Furmint is a very high-quality grape, capable of producing intense, complex wines of great age-worthiness.

Wine Region: We're in Tokaji here, in north-east Hungary, and the oldest classified vineyards in the world (denominated in 1700). World renowned in the 17th and, especially, 18th centuries, the wines of this region fell from favour in the 20th century, particularly during the Soviet occupation, when quantity was prioritised over quality.

Wine Producer: The history of Barta Pince is a recent one, but is predicated on centuries of local wine making and, indeed, centuries of history of a single terroir: the King's Hill in Tokaji. This slope, that has changed hands between the nobility and the church over the years, was abandoned after WWII, but was given new life by Károly Barta, who recognised the significance of the terroir. It is one of Tokaji's grand cru sites. Since 2009, the wines have been made and cellared in a 16th century Baroque mansion on the main street of Mád.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

A beautiful thing in the glass: pale and clear and limpid. But it's not exactly an aromatic thing to nose. I could find mild scents of grapefruit and other citrus complicating the light aromas of flowery apples. There's also a distinctly mineral scent. The palate offers real snap and bite to its nicely defined flavours of apple and lime, the core of green orange acidity really adding vim and intensity. A long wine and, at the death, there's a texture like fine, granular paste. Wow, this is good.

#3wordtastingnote: apple, mineral, rich
