2017 Moschofilero Feast, Semeli Wines

2017 Moschofilero Feast, Semeli Wines
ref. SEME170 FEB19

Wine Variety: The name of this grape, Moschofilero, actually refers to a whole series of genetically identical clones that nevertheless have markedly differing characteristics in terms of leaf shape, fruit colour etc. However, the most widely-planted version has pinkish skin when ripe and is capable of producing rosé wines, as well as white. Many vineyards contain a number of different clones. Moschofilero's home territory are vineyards at altitude in the Peloponnese.

Wine Region: We are in the Peloponese here, just south of Nemea. Mantinea occupies a deep-soiled plateau at an elevation of just over 600 metres. This high altitude results in a long growing season with harvest taking place normally in late September.

Wine Producer: Princess Semeli - for whom this winery is named - was impregnated by Zeus. Zeus's wife was understandably put out by their shenanigans and, in a tizzy, killed Semeli. Zeus took the unborn baby (subsequently named Dionysus) from his paramour's corpse and sewed it into his thigh, there to attain full term. Stuff like this occurred all the time in Ancient Greece.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

Real sweet shop, varietal aromas of Turkish Delight to the nose. It's clean and clear and has that rose garden spicy musk. The palate is clean as a whip, nicely fresh and dense. And there's super sustain to the rose petal and apple fruit. The palate finishes with a really good scrunch of freshness. A delicious refresher. One wonders whether the sherbet of old tasted like this.
