2017 Blaufrankisch, Balla Geza

2017 Blaufrankisch, Balla Geza
ref. BALL170 MAY19

Wine Variety: The suffix -frankisch has for centuries denoted a grape/wine of good quality, inferring Franconia as a source. Blaufrankisch was only documented in the mid-19th century, however, and is thought to have originated somewhere in Austria, Hungary or Croatia. Blaufrankisch is yet another offspring of the promiscuous Gouais Blanc grape and itself was crossed with Sankt Laurent to produce Zweigelt.

Wine Region: This is western Romania - Transylvania to be precise - and the wine producing region of Minis, not far from the Hungarian border. Viticulture probably began in Romania when Greeks settled the Black Sea coast in the 7th century BC.

Wine Producer: Balla Geza started wine production in 1999 in an effort to re-establish wine production in a region once famous for its viticulture. They work some 120 hectares of vineyards here, 80% of which are red and mostly planted with local varieties such as Feteasca Regala, Furmint, Kadarka, Feteasca Neagra, Mustoasa de Maderat and, of course, Blaufrankish.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

Lovely thing in the glass, this: just medium-deep tomato red. And the nose is a lovely thing, too: a summer pudding ripeness of dark domestic berries from the fruit cage, plus a hint of chocolate. The palate is, for the merest instant, a rich, plush thing, but just as instantly grabs some very upright, very juicy acidity. Within the dark fruit are the finest, lightly pumice-like tannins. Fruit relates to dark plum and there’s high snap and pop to the palate. It’s long, too and the texture becomes clay-like. Did I say “very long”? I should have done, as it certainly is. Super wine. Love it. Slow cook that baa-lamb with plenty of rosemary…
