2017 Bellone Bianco, Casale del Giglio

2017 Bellone Bianco, Casale del Giglio
ref. LAZI170 JUN19

Grape Variety: The name of this variety, Bellone Bianco, is probably derived from the handsome nature of the bunches, which are large and fulsome. It has been put forward as being a variety mentioned by Pliny the Elder, but there is no way of confirming this. Plantings are few and far between, and very "bitty", meaning that it usually ends up in local blends, including Frascati. It can, however, produce extremely fine wines, especially when planted on volcanic soils.

Wine Region: Lazio, home of Italy's capital, is a significant producer of wine, being the 6th most important region in terms of quantity. However, it is of declining significance and only a small proportion of what it makes is of DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) level. Wines are mostly white and from the Malvasia and Trebbiano grapes.

Wine Producer: Antonio Santarelli grew up on his family estate some 50km south of Rome in an area with no tradition of viticulture. Antonio managed to convince renowned grape scientists of the region's potential and in 1985 over 60 experimental grape varieties were planted on the estate. These included international grapes (e.g. Syrah; Petit Manseng; Sauvignon Blanc) and those more local. Casale del Giglio now runs 180 hectares of vineyards from which they make almost 20 different wines.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

This just looks fabulous in the glass: a pronounced pale gold, very healthy (the colour perhaps derived from the thick skins of this variety). The nose is beautifully ripe; it smells delicious. I can find a blend of citrus and orchard fruit, along with suspicions of fruit from rather nearer the equator: papaya, perhaps; maybe mango. There's really good weight in the mouth and through the fruit concentration comes a fine line of wonderful citrus acidity, lime-like and fresh. Above all, this is a very delicious mouthful of white wine!

#3wordtastingnote: fruity, concentrated, fresh
