2016 Cadarca, Balla Geza

2016 Cadarca, Balla Geza
ref. BALL161 AUG19

Wine Variety: Locally, Kadarka (or Cadarca...) is considered to be indigenous to Bulgaria, yet the Romanians also claim it. Yet other theories suggest that it might originally have been imported from the Balkan states. The truth is in there somewhere! Recent developments with Kadarka clones are surmounting cultivation weaknesses in the grape, thus it is likely to become more popular with wine growers in future. Kadarka is one of the varieties that go into the Hungarian blend known as Bull's Blood. It is also important in the vineyards of Albania.

Wine Region: This is western Romania - Transylvania to be precise - and the wine producing region of Minis, not far from the Hungarian border. Viticulture probably began in Romania when Greeks settled the Black Sea coast in the 7th century BC.

Wine Producer: Balla Geza started wine production in 1999 in an effort to re-establish wine production in a region once famous for its viticulture. They work some 120 hectares of vineyards here, 80% of which are red and mostly planted with local varieties such as Feteasca Regala, Furmint, Kadarka, Feteasca Neagra, Mustoasa de Maderat and, of course, Blaufrankisch.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

Slightly violet-tinged deep ruby. Pretty colour. Lovely pure dark domestic, fresh fruit aromas of cherry with hints of raspberry ripple. There’s an elusive rather animal/earthy/inky scent as well that I struggle to put my finger on. The palate is cool, with the silky entry giving way to some piquant, spicy, almond tannins that bind the tongue increasingly throughout the mouth. A long wine, medium weight, of superb density and a distinctly upright, almost peppery structure. Super.

#3wordtastingnote: cherry, cool, spicy
