2018 Cayetana Solo, Bodegas Martinez Paiva

2018 Cayetana Solo, Bodegas Martinez Paiva
ref. PAYV180 AUT19
On Sale

Wine Variety: Cayetana Blanca is a very old variety from the Iberian peninsula, its long history evidenced by its vast family tree that includes a great many of the grapes of both Spain and Portugal, more or less extant. It does seems likely that Cayetana Blanca's origins lie in the Alentejo region of Portugal (this despite the fact that it is little grown there today). Much of the Spanish Cayetana planting goes into Brandy de Jerez.

Wine Region: Extremadura is Spain's wild west, a land of sheep farmers and harsh climate. It is Spain's fourth largest producer of wine, much of which goes to make Brandy of Jerez.

Wine Producer: Martinez Paiva run 350 hectares of vineyards growing both local and international varieties. They are based in the Tierra de Barros - Land of Mud - on deep soils that help the vines survive the harsh conditions. They produce modern varietal wines from their state-of-the-art winery.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

Really pretty pale lemon colour in the glass. A most unusual nose that takes in very ripe orchard fruit (especially pear) along with a wealth of other very hard to pin down smells. There’s perhaps a hint of cold ferment about it. I find lime and a hint of rhubarb. The palate is choc-full of flavour. It is also perhaps a fraction off-dry. Lots more mixed orchard and citrus fruit on the palate culminating in a spicy, complex, dense finish. Really unusual mouthful, this.

#3wordtastingnote: pear, spice, off-dry
