2018 Picpoul de Pinet Villa des Croix, SO Vignerons

2018 Picpoul de Pinet Villa des Croix, SO Vignerons
ref. VILL180 AUT19

Wine Variety: Another tangled web of a variety, there being black, white and "grey" examples of Picpoul, all sharing the same DNA... This is clearly a very old variety; earliest mention in writing is of the black version in the 14th century. The Spanish red grape Picapoll is the same as the French Picpoul, but Picapoll Blanco is altogether separate from the French white Picpoul (or Piquepoul). Picpoul Blanc retains good freshness even in vineyards heated by the Mediterranean sun. It is one of the authorized 13 varieties in Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Wine Region: The Languedoc lies in south central France. Taking in the three départments of Aube, Hérault and Gard, it stretches from the Rhône in the east to the Roussillon (with which it is often associated) in the west. Here are planted something like a quarter of all French vineyards. Much of the wine produced here is non-AC i.e. the region is responsible for a great deal of what the Americans would call “jug wine”. Residents of the region at one time spoke Occitan, hence the name Langue d'Oc.

Wine Producer: Founded by Daniel Orsolini and Claude Serra, SO Vignerons has been vinifying wines from around the Languedoc since 2005. The company looks to forge close relationships with the growers it works with, by signing long-term contracts and providing expert viticultural advice. This consultancy service is managed by Serra, who as well as running the winemaking for the group, is also a professor at Montpellier University of Oenology.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

Superb pale gold colour in the glass, showing some lime lights. There's real richness of ripe fruit on the nose and that tell-tale earthy/lemon aroma I associate with Picpoul. There are bits and pieces of ripe apple, too: russet, I think. The palate starts rich and broad, contains further adventures in the apple orchard, evolves a spine of lightly saline, mineral structure that licks the finish clean. Above all this is extremely delicious and would be so with or without food.

#3wordtastingnote: lemon, apple, salt
