2018 Cereza, Durigutti

2018 Cereza, Durigutti
ref. CARA180 AUT19

Wine Variety: Cereza is the most planted grape variety in Argentina. A pink-skinned grape, it is used in the production of both rosé and white wines. It is the result of a wild crossing of Muscat of Alexandria and Listan Prieto. Its name, rather charmingly, means "cherry".

Wine Region: Mendoza is a large Argentine wine producing region just over the Andes from Santiago. It produces 70% of all Argentina's wine. Vines are planted at altitude - between 600 and 1,100 meters - in the foothills of the mountains. Most rainfall occurs in the summer months, but is moderate. Climate is continental, but lacks extremes.

Wine Producer: Durigutti was formed by Mendoza-born brothers Hector and Pablo in 2002. The brothers bought their first five hectares of vineyard in 2007, then in 2008, purchased a winery and started refurbishing it.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

Remarkably pale cherry-ruby red in the glass. The nose holds darker promises than one would expect given the colour. It’s quite broad and ripe/rich and offers a nutty nuance to the red and black cherry fruit. There’s sweet note like gingerbread, too. This is very quickly fresh and snappy across the tongue and there is something within that makes one think of the ocean: fish even. It’s a salinity to the structure. Tannin is held within, is mild but fresh. And the acidity is pronounced, firm, clean and lasting. This is a classic vin de soif i.e. one to drink with a snack of charcuterie. The finish is wonderfully dry and lasting, with that juicy acidity and the wisp of sustained tannic support. Lovely. Delicious when chilled, even perhaps at its best!
